OSM Hiring Biology Intern for Knoxville Field Office

OSM will be hiring a biology intern to be located in the Knoxville Field Office for the period May 11 – Sept 30. The intern will be assisting me in conducting preliminary fieldwork and literature review for a project involving assessment of effects of surface mining activities on stream health as measured by benthic macroinvertebrates. The project will involve a combination of office and field work. Overnight travel will be required, as well as fieldwork involving carrying moderately heavy loads over rough terrain and in streams. Training will be provided in macroinvertebrate sampling techniques and identification. The potential project area includes the coal mining regions of West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. The main focus of this summer’s work will be site selection and evaluation for the actual project which will begin next year.

Salary is as follows:

  • Freshman/Sophomore GS-3  ~ $10.31/hr
  • Junior/Senior GS-4 ~ $11.57/hr
  • Graduate Student depending on experience up to GS-7 ~ $16.00/hr

Travel expenses for field work will be paid including lodging and per diem .
